Chennai, June 22 (UNI) The satellite launching fee, charged by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for launching foreign satellites, would come down drastically once ISRO commercialises GSLV launches.

Mr S Renganath, Additional Secretary, Department of Space, addressing the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Technology, which visited the Sathyabama University here, said the cost would come down from the existing 14,000 US Dollars per kg to 10,000 US Dollars, once GSLV becomes commercially operational.

He said the fee charged by ISRO was very low compared to the fee charged by France and the United States. While France charges 21,000 US Dollars per kg, the US charges 25,000 US Dollars, while it was just 14,000 US Dollars by ISRO.

''This will further come down to 10,000 US Dollars per kg, once the GSLV launches are commercialised,'' Mr Renganath said.

''We are the cheapest in the world, though Indian Space budget was just two per cent of NASA and nine per cent of European Space Agency,'' Mr Renganath said and hailed the Indian Space Scientists for their remarkable achievements.

The satellite building cost in India was also the cheapest in the World, he said. For building a 36 Mhz satellite, the European countries charge 1.8 to 2.4 million US Dollars, while ISRO charges only one million US Dollars, he said.

Similarly, for covering remote sensing data, the foreign countries charged 18 to 20 Dollars per sq km, while ISRO charges just eight US Dollars in case of domestic and 12 US Dollars for foreign agencies. Indian Space Agency offered good money for value, he said.
