Shillong, Jun 20: A woman and a truck driver were seriously injured when miscreants hurled a petrol bomb at a truck last night in Meghalaya, police said here today.

The incident occurred at Mawiong village in National Highway 40 during the five-night road blockade called by the influential Khasi Student's Union to force the state government to release their jailed Union members.

The road blockade which began at 1700 hours yesterday to 0500 hours this morning has affected movement of vehicles in the East and West Khasi Hill, Ri-Bhoi districts and the National Highways 40 and 44, the life line of Mizoram, Tripura, Barak Valley of Asom and parts of Manipur.

Meanwhile, Chief Secretary Ranjan Chatterjee told reporters that the government is committed to maintaining law and order at all cost.

The Chief Secretary said that free flow of traffic is expected to resume with the deployment of convoys on the National Highway 44.

He, however, said that there was no need of any additional forces in the state as the State Police have enough manpower to tackle the present situation.
