State-level Juvenile training begins today
Shillong, Jun 20 (UNI) A three-day state-level training programme on Juvenile Justice(Care and Protection of Children Act, 2000) began here today.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairperson of Meghalaya State Commission for Women Dr Bilarious Lynden said that state is lacking the child psycologist and proper treatment for the children.
However, he said the state has a very negligible number of juveniles. Presently, in Meghalaya, out of 21 inmates who are being looked after by the social welfare department, 16 boys and two girls are neglected by parents.
Fortunately, Meghalaya has a very strong community and traditional institutions and a good networking with NGOs and other organisations, who cares the welfare of the affected children.
She stressed the need for proper training and guidance for these children.
Mr Y Tsering, Commissioner and Secretary, Meghalaya, said ''Efforts should be made to protect the children as they are the future of the nation''.
The programme was organised by the National Institute of Social Defence, New Delhi, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
