South-West monsoon active over coastal K'taka

Bangalore, June 20: Signs of the South-East monsoon becoming vigorous over Karnataka were clear, with heavy rains lashing the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, Udupi and the ghat district of Kodagu for the past two days.

The monsoon was weak for two weeks in succession after its onset in the Karnataka coast early this month.

Meteorological department officials said the monsoon had turned active over coastal Karnataka. Moderate to rather heavy rain was likely to occur at most places over the coastal districts.

Heavy rain was likely at isolated places over the State during the next 24 hours. There would be increase in rainfall over interior Karnataka, IMD local office in-charge Director B Puttanna said.

Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada received the highest rainfall of 21 cm during the last 24 hours. Very heavy rainfall was also reported in Udupi (16), Shirali (15), Karkala (14) and Kumta (13).
