Rodrigues for action plan to improve infrastructure in Grain Market
Chandigarh, June 20 (UNI) Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Union Territory Administrator S F Rodrigues today directed the Home Secretary and the Deputy Commissioner to prepare a holistic, time-bound Action Plan for improving the infrastructure and service delivery systems in the sector 26 Grain Market.
During his visit to the Grain Market, after the unfortunate incident of Market Shed Roof Collapse a few days back, General Rodrigues told the traders that with the emerging global market trends, they need to reinvent themselves and bring about changes for upgrading their marketing.
He said that the Administration has implemented successfully the infrastructure improvement plans in major markets of the city, including Sector 17, and the same experiment of modernization can be applied to the Grain Market, with the active cooperation of traders.
He asked the senior officers of the Chandigarh Administration to identify the specific requirements of traders, customers and market users, in terms of services and other necessary facilities, by taking a broader view of economic and environmental aspects.
Expressing his anguish over the filthy and unhygienic conditions in the Vegetable market, General Rodrigues asked the traders to ensure cleanliness and maintenance of the place while pursuing their trade and business activity, keeping in view the larger public interest.
He said that Administration will facilitate the marketing processes but, at the same time, the traders must also show their concern to check encroachments and growth of illegal structures in front of their business sheds.
General Rodrigues also called for the active participation and involvement of the traders and business community in the upcoming Modern Terminal Market for fruits and vegetables near Maloya, a part of the Union Territory.
He said that this Terminal Market, which will be functional in the next 15 months, will be equipped with state-of-the-art marketing, grading and packaging facilities, catering to the needs of farmers and businessmen of the whole region.
