Police officer surrenders in connection with custodial death
Darbhanga, June 20 (UNI) A police officer, earlier posted as officer-in charge of Bahera police station in Darbhnga district, surrendered before a local court yesterday in connection with a case related to custodial death.
Police said the officer in charge, Anil Singh, surrendered before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) of Benipur subdivision Hari Dayal Patel and was remanded to judicial custody.
His property was earlier attached for evading arrest in connection with this case.
Earlier, a woman lodged a complaint in the court of ACJM in 1992, alleging that her son was beaten to death by the policemen in the lock-up of a local police station following his arrest in connection with a frivolous case.
The court had ordered an inquiry into the case but the concerned policeman was given clean chit by the Inquiry Officer (IO).
Later, the victim's mother approached the Patna High Court, seeking fresh inquiry into the case by a senior police officer.
On the directive of the Patna High Court, Inspector General (IG) of Darbhanga range Ratan Lal inquired into the case and found Mr Singh and six other policemen guilty.
Fresh action was initiated against the erring policemen after Mr Lal submitted his report to the government.
Mr Singh was placed under suspension after he was found guilty in the case.
