Over 70 take ill due to suspected food poisoning

Nashik, June 20 (UNI) More than 70 people have taken ill due to suspected food poisoning in Mukne village of Igatpuri taluka in this district since the past two days after consuming food at a community programme.

Medical officer Dr Deshmukh said, ''The victims had consumed food a community programme on June 17 and the sudden illness might have been cause by food poisoning.'' However, locals are not convinced with the doctor's explanation.

They said the illness could have possibly been caused by contaminated water as industrial effluents were being released near the source of drinking water.

Several people complained of vomiting and loose motions late on Monday night. By Tuesday morning the numbers swelled. Looking at this, the health department began treating these people at the village temple itself. Some of them were taken to Igatpuri Rural hospital while those whose condition was serious were admitted to Nashik Civil Hospital, sources said.
