Kashmir Bar seeks apology from Patil for remarks on veil
Srinagar, June 20 (UNI) The Kashmir Bar Association today sought an apology from UPA-Left Presidential candidate Pratibha Patil for her ''extremely unfortunate'' statement that 'purdah (veil)' system was introduced in India to protect women from Mughal aggressors.
In a statement here, a Bar spokesman said the Association has taken strong note of her remarks.
''The statement amounts to interfering in religious affairs of the people and has hurt the sentiments of the entire Muslim community in the country. A person of her stature should have grasped the sensitive nature of the topic,'' he said.
The spokesman also criticised the Presidential aspirant for her remarks that the 'purdah' system would be abolished in the country.
''She (Ms Patil) should apologise for her statement and withdraw from contesting the Presidential elections,'' he added.
