New Delhi, June 20 (UNI) Expressing concern over China's project to build a metalled road to the Mount Everest base camp, the BJP today said the government should take up the issue that would most likely affect the eco-system of the Himalayan region with Beijing to sort it out immediately.

BJP Spokesman Prakash Javadekar, in a statement, said construction of the proposed 108 km-long road up to the height of 5,200 metres, will begin in a week. ''This activity is likely to endanger the fragile Himalayan ecological system '' he added.

This insfrastructure venture, over which Defence Minister A K Antony had also expressed concern, of China on its side of the border was not an isolated incident.

It had denied visa to an Arunachal-born IAS probationer and had also made claim on the state. They even had threatened to extend the principle of boundary dispute to populated areas-- a principle on which the dispute was settled-- thereby jeopardising the bilateral talks between the two countries.

China, Mr Javadekar said, was threatening to divert Brahmaputra flow to its side and build a mega-hydel power generation project.

''This will spell doom for north-eastern regions and will have adverse consequences on millions of people,'' he added.

He said it was surprising that the government ''is silent on these issues and the people even don't know if the government has conveyed its anguish through diplomatic channels.

Mr Javadekar said the issue would certainly figure in the BJP National Executive.
