Barmer flood hero bags Bravery award

Jaipur, June 20 (UNI) A teacher here has been bestowed with a bravery awrad for showing exemplary courage in saving his students' lives during floods in Barmer in August last year.

Maulvi Shaukat, a teacher in a madarssa of Malva village in Barmer district of Rajasthan, has been honoured with the Silver medal in the category of Physical Bravery of the 15th Godfrey Philips for the state of Rajasthan here today.

Shaukat was at home when he heard that nearly 70 students were trapped in his madarsa due to flash flood and they were on the verge of drowning.

Immediately, he managed to reach the spot and pulled out the students and transferred them to a safer place. Standing against the tide of rising flood waters, he mangaged to save all his students even as frantic calls were made to make arragments for the rescue of his own family.

By the time he returned to save his family members, Malva village was submerged under the flood water. The Army when recovered 35 bodies, 30 turned out to be of his family members.
