Sanmina inks MoU with TN Govt to set up facility at Orgadam

Chennai, Jun 19 (UNI) Sanmina-SCI Corporation of USA, a leading global electronics manufacturing services (EMS) firm, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government for setting its manufacturing technology campus at the new SEZ at Oragadam.

The MoU was signed by Industries Secretary Shaktikanta Das and Sanmina-SCI Global Operations President Hari Pillai in the presence of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at the State Secretariat here.

Later talking to newspersons, Mr Pillai and Mr Das said Sanmina was the first company to set up its facility in an area of 100 acre in Orgadam SEZ.

Orgadam was recently approved as SEZ by the Board of Approval and Union Commerce Ministry consequent to the Chief Minister's announcement in the State Assembly in this regard on May 8 this year, Mr Das added.

The company would be initially investing about Rs 225 crore in its new state-of-the-art campus and it would be scaled up to Rs 315 crore. The facility would provide cutting edge manufacturing services with focus on medical, defence and aerospace sector.

Mr Pillai further added that in the first phase about 1300 people would get direct employment which would go up to 5,000 to 10,000 in the next five years. The facility would also generate 2,600 to 5,000 indirect employment which would touch 10,000 to 20,000 over a five year period.

After getting clearances the construction work would start in the next two to three months and the plant would be inaugurated in July next year.

To a query, Mr Pillai answered that the new facility would manufacture products catering to both the domestic and export markets. ''The new campus will strengthen Sanmina's global mnaufacturing strategy, enabling the company to serve the growing Indian market and provide another source of cost-competitive technology products to the company's cutomers around the world.'' Refusing to give any numbers or production volumes, Mr Pillai said the Orgadam facility would be as big as its unit in Mexico.
