Chandigarh, June 19 (UNI) The Punjab Government today decided to conduct a scientific and comprehensive study, by specialised bodies, on the impact of global warming on flora and fauna of the state.

''Punjab would be the first state to get this study done on the impending danger of global warming,'' Forest and Wild Life Preservation Minister Tikshan Sood said, while presiding over a meeting of the forest and wildlife officers of the state.

While expressing serious concern over the environmental changes and global warming, Mr Sood said a study would also be done about the types of trees which should be planted to help to improve the environment.

A new forest policy for the state should be immediately drafted, keeping in view the social, economic and environmental requirements of the state, he said.

He further said that the government was considering to include damage to crops done by wild animals under the definition of ''natural calamity'' to ensure adequate compensation to the farmers.
