Jabalpur, June 19 (UNI) The Madhya Pradesh government has decided to keep the water level of the Omkareshwar project on the Narmada river at 186 metre though the Supreme Court has permitted filling up upto 189 metres, Narmada Valley Development Minister Nagendra Singh said today.

Power generation upto 520 megawatt is also possible from the project, he told UNI here.

Meanwhile, Narmada Valley Development Authority Vice Chairman Uday Kumar Varma said at Bhopal that the project's water level would be kept upto 189 metre, at which four villages of Khandwa and one of Dewas district would be affected. The dam's full reservoir level is 196.60 metre, he said.

''Rehabilitation of the project affected families is nearing completion and if some people are still left out due to mistake, justice will be done to them. However, strict action will be taken against officers found guilty'' Mr Singh said.

Serious efforts were being made to increase availability of water for irrigation and in this context, construction of both left and right bank canals of the Bargi dam near Jabalpur had been speeded up. Constant monitoring of the work was being maintained, he said.

Mr Singh claimed the canal work remained hampered for eight years due to undulated terrain. But the BJP government removed the obstacle and initiated steps to re-start the canal work by inviting tenders.

''Construction of Jobat dam having irrigation potentital of 20,000 hectare has been completed and it will be formally inauguarted before September'', said the Minister, adding the reservoir will be filled up during this rainy season.
