Major tragedy averted in Kashmir, IEDs found near Mufti's meeting

Srinagar Jun 19 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir police today averted a major tragedy when they detected and later defused two powerful liquid Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted near the main gate of a public park in south Kashmir.

Former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was to address a public meeting in the park today. However, it was postponed even before the recovery of the IEDs.

A senior police officer said that a specific information was received that militants were planning to plant an IED near the venue of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) public meeting at Dara-Shikwoh Garden.

He said though the public meeting was postponed, a massive search was launched in the entire area by the police early this morning.

During the operation, two IEDs were found.

People, including children, were immediately shifted to safer places and the entire area was sealed.

Later, the Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) was summoned and the IEDs were defused without causing any incident.
