Jail inmates resort to hunger strike in Mangalore
Mangalore, June 19 (UNI) All the 187 inmates, including seven female, today resorted to hunger strike in protest against poor facilities and pressing for fulfilment of their demands.
The demands included adequate escort while taking them to court.
The agitators alleged that since last one month the number of police escorting them have been reduced.
They also demanded re-transfer of Jailer and Jail Superintendent, who were transferred to Mysore Jail.
The agitators said that they wont withdraw the strike until top officials including the Deputy Commissioner, the Inspector General of Police (Western Range) and the Police Superintendent visit them and hold discussion with them.
However, the inmates withdrew their agitation following an assurance by local Legislator P Yogesh Bhat who visited the jail.
