HC declines stay on Sethu Canal project
Chennai, June 19 (UNI) Madras High Court today declined to stay the implementation of the Sethu Samudram Shipping Canal Project (SSSCP).
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice A P Shah and Justice P Jyothimani declined to stay the implementation of the SSSCP, but directed the Union Government to file its counter within four weeks explaining whether any study was undertaken by Archaeological or any other department, in respect to the Adams Bridge or Rama Sethu, and whether the bridge could be regarded as a national monument.
The Centre must also explain whether the project can be implemented without affecting the Adams Bridge by resorting to some other routes, as discussed by the previous committee, the Bench added.
The Bench was posted to July 23 for further hearing of the Public Interest Litigations, which was filed by Janata Party President Dr Subramanian Swamy and Hindu Munnani Founder President Rama Gopalan.
