Agartala, June 19: The Tripura government has decided to extend Armed Force (Special Powers) Act 1958 to three more police station areas of the state, as a part of security measures before the upcoming assembly elections.

According to an official report, the decision was taken in the state level co-ordination committee meeting held last week, to bring mixed populated Lefunga, Mandai and Bisharamjang police stations of West Tripura under the Act.

Though the militancy related incidents has gone down but the threats of communal tension is still there in some areas, which prompted us to extend the act, said the state home department officials adding the proposal of extension of ASPA had been sent to the Law department.

The most militancy affected states or areas,of northeast are Manipur, Nagaland and Asom as well as the Tripura and Changlang districts of Arunachal Pradesh. A 20 km belt from Asom in the neighbouring states has been declared 'disturbed areas' under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act.
