Acid case accused gets life imprisonment in HP

Mandi, June 19 (UNI) Mandi district court of Himachal Pradesh today sentenced Mohammad Magroob to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs one lakh for throwing acid on a girl.

The court, in its order, said the amount of fine should be given to the girl, who had lost both her eyes and had inflicted deep burn injuries on her face.

Magroob was accused of throwing acid on Mamta Katoch, then a BA second year student of Mandi Degree College, in a moving bus on May 27, 2005, after she spurned his advances.

Later, he was released on bail by the local court following which the girl's father approached the HP High Court, which cancelled the bail on July 31, last year.

However, the accused gave police the slip the next day while he was being brought here for the trial. He was again arrested on December 20, last year, from a house in Zaffer Colony in Meerut, following a tip-off.

The court also convicted Magroob under Section 324 of the Indian Penal Code and sentenced him to one more year of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on him.
