Rain-related incidents kill 8;flood leaves 20000 homeless in Tripura

New Delhi, June 18 (UNI) Floods rendered 20,000 people in Tripura homeless as rain-related incidents claimed eight lives across the country in the past 24 hours.

The flood situation in North Bihar, Asom and Manipur continues to be grim with the rivers flowing over the danger mark.

Lightning killed a teen-aged boy and injured another at Balat village in Meghalaya today.

Water in all rivers in Manipur valley like Thoubal, Imphal, Nambul and Iril were flowing above the danger level, following incessant rainfall.

Heavy rains killed five people in Rajasthan's Ganganagar district in the past 24 hours.

The water logging in the low lying areas claimed three lives due to house collapse.

Two members of a family died on spot when a high tension wire fell on a father and son while they were asleep.

Pre-monsoon showers hit various parts of Rajasthan, including Ganganagar, which had been reeling under acute heatwave conditions.

Two women were killed in Tripura's Dhalai district when a 132 KV power line feel on them yesterday.

About 20,000 people were rendered homeless due to fresh floods in Tripura.

Meanwhile, official reports said cyclonic strikes over the southwestern and northwestern parts of Tripura destroyed about 100 houses in three localities yesterday, while three people sustained serious injuries.

Besides, thunderstorms and heavy showers disrupted power and water supply as well as surface transport.

More than one lakh people had been displaced in the past week and the situation was worsening, officials said adding, ''The flood situation is grim as the water level of all major rivers and tributaries are gradually rising, although rains stopped late night yesterday.'' Troops were on alert as several rivers continued to flow above the danger level and roads to the neighbouring states of Tripura, Barak Valley of Asom and Mizoram were disrupted due to floods.
