One AIKS member gunned down, Villagers clash with police

Midnapur, Jun 17 (UNI) Nilkamal Jana, a member of the All India Kishan Sabha-the CPM organ for farmers-was gunned down today in a forest near Parihati under Jamboni PS in the afternoon while returning form a training camp of the AIKS, R Rajshekharan, SP West Midnapur district said.

With this, three CPM activists were killed allegedly by the Jharkhand party (JKP) in the last one-week.

Some masked men approached Jana and pumped two rounds into his head from a close range.

No arrest had yet been made in this connection.

CPM had given a call for observing a protest day tomorrow in entire Jhargram Sub-division.

In another incident, police had to fire 10 rounds in the air and lathicharged a group of villagers near Bachurdoba in the small hours today after the villagers started pelting stones against the police, including Additional SP operations, Bharat Lal Meena.

While returning from a combing operation in Jamboni, where a CPM activist was killed the day before yesterday, the additional SP saw many people sitting on the road in the darkness of the night.

Sensing something amiss he challenged the villagers. The villagers took exception at this and attacked the police. While the villagers' plea was that they were sitting on the road at night due to extreme hot weather.

Ten villagers were seriously injured during police lathi-charge and had been admitted to Jhargram Hospital.

An undeclared bandh in Jhargram was observed today protesting against police high-handedness.
