Goa pays tributes to martyrs on State Revolution Day
Panaji, June 18 (UNI) Goa Governor S C Jamir and Chief Minister Digamber Kamat today led the state in paying glorious tributes to freedom fighters and martyrs who laid down their lives for the liberation of Goa from Portuguese colonial rule, on the occasion of the State Revolution Day.
Speaking on the function held at Azad Maidan here. Mr Jamir recalled the heroic contribution of freedom fighters in the struggle.
The Chief Minister said that noted socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia gave a clarion call to the people of Goa to unite and fight for liberating the territory from foreign rule. He also announced that the Government will install Lohia's statue at Lohia Maidan in south Goa on Liberation day, which is observed on December 19.
The Chief Minister also promised the gathered freedom fighters that their problems, if any, will be redressed.
After the floral tributes at the martyrs memorial, the Governor and Chief Minister honoured 38 freedom fighters by presenting them with a Shawl and Shrifal, as momentos.
Similar functions was also held at Margao and Ponda.
At Margao, Cabinet Minister Ravi S Naik paid tributes to the memory of martyrs at Lohia maidan, while at Ponda, Cabinet Minister Ramkrishna Dhvalikar paid tributes at Kranti maidan area.
Earlier students from different schools in the city held 'Prabhat Pheris' around the state capital and later assembled at Azad maidan for the fuction.
