Guwahati, June 18 (UNI) Flood continued to create havoc in several parts of Asom, with both the Brahmaputra and the Barak valleys of the state remaining inundated since the past few days.

Surface communication with the Barak valley was also disrupted since Saturday due to landslides.

An artificial flood this afternoon brought life to a standstill in the capital city of Guwahati. Most of the city was submerged in water after heavy downpour at noon.

The Brahmaputra was already flowing above the danger level in Dibrugarh in Upper Asom and Jia Bharali river in Sonitpur district of central Asom following incessant rain.

Hundreds of villages have been affected by the flood across the state. Boats have been deployed and gratuitous relief distributed to the affected people, official sources said.

Around 826.75 hectares of cropland have been affected till now in the first wave of the floods.

Rising water level of rivers have washed away embankments in several places, while in others, the rivers are on the verge of entering the land.

Meanwhile, flood water inundated many areas in Cachar and Karimganj districts of Barak valley since yesterday.

Flood control dykes of Longai and Singla rivers in Karimganj districts have been breached in many places, forcing the people to take shelter in high places.

Coupled with flood situation, Barak valley's surface communication with rest of the country has been disrupted since Saturday due to landslide in Malidahar on NH-44, which connects the region with Guwahati.

BRTF sources today said traffic on this route has partially been restored even as boulders and debris continue to fall down the hills due to incessant rain.
