Nashik, June 18 (UNI) Five women, wives of former workers of the India Security Press (ISP) and Currency Notes Press (CNP), tried to commit suicide by pouring kerosene over themselves, near the district collectorate here today, over pending demands to provide jobs to their wards.

The women--Ranjana Dattatray Goasvi, Narmada Vasant Shelke, Indu Shivram Garud, Mohini Vijay Arsool and Jyoti Bhaosaheb Rajguru -- had participated in a morcha to the district collectorate, demanding jobs for their children in the ISP and CNP units in place of their husbands, who had either died or were unfit for duty.

The morcha started at B D Bhalekar High School ground and proceeded towards the district collectorate when these women allegedly poured kerosene and tried to set themselves afire.

However, alert policemen foiled their suicide attempt.

A case has been registered against the women under sections 309 and 107 of the IPC. The morcha leader reached the district collectorate and submitted a memorandum of their demand.

Frustrated over their inability to get jobs for their wards, despite making representations to Congress President Sonia Gandhi too, the women tried to take the drastic step, sources added.
