Fire in Kargil exchange affectS telephone service
Kargil, Jun 18 (UNI) The telephone and mobile services in this border town were affected after fire broke out in the Kargil exchange in the wee hours today.
Official sources said fire broke out in one of the room of exchange building at 0215 hours early this morning and spread to nearby rooms.
However, timely action by the personnel of 121 Infantry brigade controlled the leaping flames and brought the fire under control before it could damage other machinery in the exchange.
The District telecom engineer P Dorjay told UNI that fire broke out due to short circuit in the main electric line.
There is no major loss to exchange, he said, adding water used to extinguish the fire damaged some parts.
Mr Dorjay said all the records and satellite equipments are safe.
However, the landlines connected with the exchange were affected while mobile service was restored at 1000 hours in the town.
He said it will take few days to restore the landlines.
