Varanasi, June 18 (UNI) Two people died and 12 others were taken seriously ill, following the outbreak of fatal diarrhoea in the weaver community-dominated Lohta area here over the last 48 hours.

Chief Medical Officer S K Mishra said today two patients succumbed, while 12 others were being treated for the water borne infectious disease.

A team of doctors is camping in the area and round the clock ambulance service had been pressed into action. Door-to-door medical assistance was being provided to patients, Dr Mishra said.

Meanwhile, District Magistrate Beena Kumari Meena along with other officials today visited Lohta and directed concerned officials to immediately ensure clearing of choked drains and repair of pipelines supplying contaminated drinking water in the area.

The DM also directed the Village Development Officer to prepare a detailed plan for keeping a check on future outbreak of the infectious ailment in the area.

Admitting that state of basic civic amenities was in shambles in the locality, Ms Meena instructed the concerned officials to overcome the situation as soon as possible.
