CNG in J

Srinagar, June 18 (UNI) The Centre today said the introduction of compressed natural gas (CNG) in Jammu and Kashmir was very much on the cards, but asserted that auto LPG facility would soon be set up in the state to protect environment.

''Definitely, CNG in Jammu and Kashmir is on the cards. In fact, the pipeline network is being expanded throughout the country at present. We expect to have additional gas available in the country within the next two years. For CNG, you need to have gas,'' Oil Secretary M S Srinivasan told reporters here.

He said once the gas availability was ensured, the pipeline for CNG to Jammu and Kashmir would be laid.

''But, as an interim measure, we are planning to introduce auto LPG in a big way in Jammu and Kashmir. This will be done to protect the environment in the state,'' Mr Srinivasan added.

He said Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad made a specific demand to augment bulk storage capacity in the state, particularly interior locations.

Mr Srinivasan said the oil companies have agreed to invest Rs 90 crore to augment this facility in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Chief Minister has requested additional investment, he said, adding the Centre would examine it.
