Andman scientists Andaman successfully breed Indian Magur
Port Blair, Jun 18 (UNI) Scientists of Central Agriculture Research Institute (CARI) have successfully bred Indian Magur in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
This breed of fish is in high demand in India, not only for its delicacy but also for protein-rich nutrition value.
In an experiment made in CARI centre of Port Blair, the scientists had successfully bred the first batch of this species in the last few months.
''Recently the first batch of hatchling is being cultured in their laboratory, which will provide seedlings for the farmers in respect to adopt pisciculture in their farm land,'' S Dam Roy the scientist of CARI told reporters today.
Mr Roy said that the fish can be cultured in paddy field as well as in monoculture or polyculture and can be a candidate species for Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The CARI had collected sufficient quantity of brood stocks from various places of South Andaman, which were maintained for a period of four month for specialized feeding and environmental conditioning, he said.
Since decades the Port Blair Branch of CARI is working for the development of agriculture in the islands. Successful breeding of Indian Magur will add another feather in CARI cap.
