JBIC to lend Rs 280 cr for urban infra in TN

Chennai, June 17: The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) will extend a financial assistance of Rs 280 crore for various infrastructure projects in urban areas of Tamil Nadu.

The amount would be disbursed to urban local bodies through the Tamil Nadu Urban Development Fund (TNUDF).

The key features of the assistance were low interest rate and a repayment tenure of 40 years, TNUDF officials said.

Representatives from Nomura Research Institute, Tokyo, which conducted a survey on behalf of the JBIC, Transwel, the Delhi-based consultant for the bank and officials of Tamil Nadu Urban Development Fund (TNUDF) and the Department of Municipal Administration and Water Supply met in Tambaram and Pallavaram here yesterday.

Urban areas adjoining Chennai and other places in the rest of Tamil Nadu, including Hosur and Tirupur would benefit from the JBIC's assistance, they said.

Researchers from Nomura Research Institute would visit the elected representatives and officials of urban bodies to know their requirements, particularly basic facilities, besides large infrastructure projects relating to solid waste management, sewage and transport, the officials added.
