Gandhi statue desecrated in Karnanaka

Dabaspet, Karnataka, Jun 17 (UNI) Tension prevailed in this town today after miscreants desecrated the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at Robertsonpet circle.

Activists belonging to different political parties staged dharnas at the spot and demanded the arrest of the culprits.

Police rushed to the scene and pacified the agitators and assured them that the statue would be replaced within 24 hours.

DSP K A Nanaiah said the agitators, belonging to the Congress, BJP and the JD(S), had called for a bandh of the town today and business establishments in the main roads had downed their shutters. After an appeal from the police the shops were opened.

The situation was under control, he said.
