Female barking deer succumbs to injury

Kendrapada, Jun 17 (UNI) A female barking deer rescued by a villager, died despite being given treatment by forest officials here today.

The animal, listed under Scheduled 3 of Wildlife Protection Act, succumbed to injuries at Kendrapara forest Range office where the hoofed animal was undergoing treatment for the past fortnight.

After conducting an autopsy, the forest officials buried the body in the office premises.

According to official sources, the Kendrapara forest range officials had rescued the two-feet-long female barking deer on May 28 from Bazipada village under Derabish bock of Kendrapara police station.

The animal was found by one Sarat Mallick ,a resident of Bazipada village, lying injured in a field. The villager had provided treatment to the injured barking deer with the help of the local veterinary office at Chhata and later handed over to the local forest officials for better treatment.

Forest officials, said the animal probably was trapped in nets as they found cut injuries on its front legs along with some internal injuries in its body.

They stated that the deer might have fallen prey to taxidermists, who were taking it with them in order to kill and sell its flesh.

The animal, they suspected, might have escaped and in the process sustained critical injuries. She suffered from paralysis on both its back leg.
