CPMT probe team to submit its report on June 19

Jaunpur, June 17 (UNI) A seven-member team, set-up to probe into the irregularities in the Combined Pre Medical Test (CPMT) 2007 results will submit its report on June 19.

The team today reached Jaunpur and started its investigation into the irregularities, which were found in the CPMT results, declared on June 14.

The team comprises Special Secretary, Medical Education, S K Raghuvanshi, Medical Education Director-General Dr Kamal Sahni along with Technical Director of NIC S F A Naqwi, Registrar of UP Technical University, U S Tomar and three others from Delhi. Talking to UNI team member Dr Sahni said, ''The probe will end latest by tomorrow and we will submit our report to the Mayawati government on June 19.'' On the direction of the Uttar Pradesh government, Jaunpur District Magistrate had sealed the premises of the Poorvanchal University. The district administration had also conducted raids on the premises.

The VC's residence and CPMT control room, sealed yesterday, were today reopened by the investigating team, who went through the records present on the spot.

Students, who appeared in the CPMT examinations held last month for admission to six UP government medical colleges, had staged violent protests across the state alleging irregularities in the entrance test result announced on June 14. A student had also committed suicide.

More than 80,000 students had appeared in the examinations for admission in the state medical colleges, of which about 15,000 were called for the counselling. The medical aspirants had demanded the rechecking of all the answer books of the premier medical test of the state.

Talking to reporters here this morning, Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University Vice Chancellor (VC) K P Singh said the answer sheets have been re-evaluated and results would be declared soon after the directions of the state government.

Prof Singh said, ''Being a chairperson of the CPMT exam, I take the moral responsibility of the irregularities. But, I want to note that the mistake was not intentional...it was just a technical snag.'' ''As the results were declared too early, manual cheking could not be done,'' the VC added.

He accepted ''If the students had not gone on rampage, the irregularities in the CPMT results would have remained unknown.

Mr Singh, however, refused to disclose where the copies had been sent for cheking.

Late yesterday, a district administration team had raided the residence of Mr Singh in Lanka area of Varanasi in connection with the CPMT exam episode.

A team of officials led by City Magistrate K N Singh conducted a raid at the Brij En Clave Colony residence of the VC and later sealed the house.

A similar raid was conducted at the office of Prof Singh in the Purvanchal University.

Taking prompt note of the student unrest, the UP government had stayed the counselling of successful candidates and ordered a probe into the entire matter by a two-member committee.
