Centre, Maharashtra to sign MoU to strengthen Panchayati Raj

Nagpur, Jun 17 (UNI) The Centre and the Government of Maharashtra will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Mumbai tomorrow to strengthen the Panchayati Raj system in the state, Union Minister for Panchayati Raj Mani Shankar Aiyar said here today.

Speaking after inaugurating a daylong convention of all Congress members of various local self-government bodies in Maharashtra, Mr Aiyar said the MoU would specify the steps that the state government intended to take to strengthen the Panchayati Raj system and the support that the Union Government would extend to achieve the objective.

The MoU would also spell out the achievements of the Panchayati Raj system in Maharashtra, he said.

Mr Aiyar informed that the MoU would be signed by him, Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Minister for Rural Development Vijaysinh Mohite-Patil.
