Weatherman predicts flood threat in Asom

Guwahati, June 16 (UNI) Water levels of the Brahmaputra and its various tributaries are rising as persistent rainfall continued in Asom as well as the entire Northeast since the last couple of days.

Rising water of the Buridihing and Pavoi in central Asom has washed away some embankments, affecting several villages in Biswanath Chariali revenue circle of Sonitpur district.

The Brahmaputra was also flowing slightly above the danger level at Dibrugarh in upper Asom.

There is no relief in sight as forecasts of the Regional Meteorology Centre(RMC) here said heavy to very heavy rainfall was likely to occur over the entire northeastern region in the next three to four days.

While the south-west monsoon hit hard in various parts of the state, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, Asom and Arunachal Pradesh also recorded more than normal rainfall in the last 24 hours.

''The south-west monsoon is coming in spells, which last for four to five days. There is likely to be a brief break after each spell,'' an RMC source said today.

So far the state government has not opened up any relief camps but are closely monitoring the situation while Sonitpur and Lakhimpur along with Dhemaji district have started the mandatory flood drill to meet any situation.
