New Delhi, June 16 (UNI) For the second consecutive day, the rain gods showered their bounty on Delhiites bringing the mercury down further, maintaining the cool climes in the Capital.

Close on the heels of heavy showers last evening, the city was lashed by another spell of rainfall this morning.

The showers, which hit Delhi at 0800 hrs, further brought down the mercury level in the Capital, making it a cool weekend for Delhiites who have been experiencing a severe heat wave since the beginning of June.

The rain, together with the cool Easterly winds, plummeted the maximum and minimum temperatures in Delhi. While the minimum dropped to 23.5 degrees Celsius, six degrees below normal, the maximum too fell sharply to 34 degrees, six degrees below normal.

About 30 mm of rainfall was recorded this morning, the weathermen said. This morning's showers followed a burst of heavy rains in the capital last evening, which met officials said could be the first pre-Monsoon rains to hit Delhi.

With this, over 75 mm of rainfall has been recorded in Delhi since yesterday.

The Met office said the showers are an offshoot of the south-easterly winds blowing through the capital for the last few days.

With the influence of the easterlies prevailing, more showers are expected in the coming days. The Met office has forecast a cloudy sky in Delhi during the next 24 hours with few more spells of rain and thundershowers accompanied with squalls in some areas.

The BBC has also forecast heavy rains in the capital in the next two to three days.
