Mercury rises in region but stays low

Chandigarh, Jun 16 (UNI) After recording a drastic fall yesterday, the mercury soared in many areas in the north-west India today but continued to stay below normal following pre-monsoon rains.

Despite rains in Punjab, the maximum rose at Amritsar, Ludhiana and Patiala but hovered five degrees to eight degrees below normal at these places, respectively recording 35.2 degrees, 33.4 degrees and 33.7 degrees celsius.

The temperatures also rose in Haryana where several areas experienced showers. Ambala and Karnal recorded 33.8 degrees celsius, five degrees below normal, and 31.2 degrees, nine degrees down, respectiely. Hissar, which usually remains the hottest place in the state, registered the maximum at 34.0 degrees celsius. The town measured 8.2 mm rain overnight.

The mercury hovered six degrees below normal at Chandigarh which was lashed by rain last night. The city with 14.2 mm rain recorded the maximum temperature at 33.2 degrees celsius.

The temperatures also stayed below normal in Himachal Pradesh in the wake of moderate rainfall. The mercury hovered one degree below normal at Bhuntar in Kullu disrict, recording 32.3 degrees while Sundernagar in Mandi district registered 31.9 degrees and Kalpa in Kinnaur district showed 23.4 degrees celsius. The capital town of Shimla, which was also lashed by rain, recorded 23.5 degrees celsius, one degree below normal.

The Met Office has predicted moderate to rather heavy rain or thundershowers at many places in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana during the next 24 hours. Thundersquall with speed exceeding 45 km per hour is likely to occur at isolated places in the region.
