HP to promote eco-tourism, says CM
Shimla, June 16 (UNI) Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh today said his government will promote eco-tourism by seeking active participation of locals and various government departments, while creating necessary infrastructure in various parts of the state.
The state government would spend Rs eight crore to create necessary infrastructure, besides re-naming 143 forest rest house as Himachal Forest Lodge, he said while presiding over the first meeting of the governing body of Eco-tourism Society.
Mr Singh said constitution of the eco-tourism society would further supplement the endeavour of the state government in promotion of eco-tourism.
There was no dearth of funds to undertake projects to safeguard the environment and ecology of the Himalayas, he said.
He said viable eco-circuits were being developed with association of the forest, tourism and other departments.
The catchment area treatment plan (CAT) would also be utilised by the local eco-societies for boosting eco-tourism by maintaining the forest rest houses, inspecting huts, maintenance of hikes, treks and trails, he added.
Mr Singh said one per cent of the CAT plan has been earmarked for the promotion of eco-tourism in its respective areas.
Services of professionals would be requisitioned to operate forest rest houses taken over by the society besides upgrading the skills of the forest employees and participation of local people in the promotional activities, he said.
