Chennai, June 16 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister K Ponmudi today said last year's 65:35 seat sharing agreement between self financing engineering colleges and the government would continue this year also.

Talking to reporters at the secretariat here, Mr Ponmudi said 'we cannot hold talks every year. Last year, before passing the law, we had detailed discussions with all self financing colleges and reached a consenus on sharing seats in the ratio of 65:35.

This year the consortium of self financing colleges has moved Madras High Court seeking a direction to allow them to fill up all the seats themselves citing the Supreme Court's verdict in the P A Inamdar Case.

Asked if the government would consult the colleges, he said'since the case was pending before the court, we have to wait and watch.' Mr Ponmudi said 2,000 lecturer posts, lying vacant in government arts and science colleges, would be filled up before August through Teachers Recruitment Board.

The recruitment process had already begun and more than 37,000 applications received so far.

The government had set up 70 committees comprising professors to verify the certificates from July nine to 17.

Verification would be done in the presence of applicants and marks awarded based on their qualifications before being called up for final interview.

The process for filling up 300 backlog vacancies in the lecturers posts would also begin soon.
