BMC demolishes 750 hutments near Mithi river

Mumbai, Jun 16 (UNI) The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) today demolished around 750 hutments on the banks of the River Mithi in the eastern suburb of Kurla.

According to official sources, the demolition took place in Krantinagar, Sahayog Nagar, Sandesh Nagar and Hanuman chawl area near Airports Authority of India (AAI) at Kurla.

The shanties were razed in order to widen the basin of Mithi river, which is being widened to 100 metres, downstream at Airport towards Kurla side and to construct roads of 12 metres on either side of the river banks. Of 750 hutments, about 510 such structures have already been given an alternate accommodation, sources added.

BMC carried out today's demolition drive with the help of Additional Collector (encroachment) staff. Deputy Municipal Commissioner of zone five M D Sawant supervised the demolition.

At least 100 labourers from the ward office carried out the work with the help of eight JCBs and five poclains. The work started at 0930 hrs and went upto 1730 hrs, sources added.
