Traders booked, fined for deceiving tourists in Kashmir

Srinagar, June 15 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir government has booked 170 traders for deceiving tourists and violating various norms of the Tourist Trade Act, an official spokesman said today.

He said the state government has launched a massive drive against the defaulters.

The Enforcement Wing of the Tourism Department has booked 170 traders and realised a fine of Rs 21,700 from them for violating various norms of the act, the spokesman added.

He said Rs 4,850 has been retrieved from the offenders and refunded the amount to the complainants (tourists).

A special checking drive has been launched at Gulmarg and Dal Lake areas where 138 tourist traders were found violating the act.

The spokesman said an amount of Rs 9,100 was realised as fine from Gulmarg area only.

Majority of handicraft dealers were directed to obtain proper registration, keep rate card and manufacturing tags so as to differentiate goods made in Kashmir from those in Amritsar.

All those associated with water sports activities were asked to have life safety equipment in their units, he added.

The state government has urged the general public and tourists not to board any such unit of water sports activities which does not have proper life safety equipment.

The spokesman said a mobile assistance van was available at various points for the assistance of tourists.
