PMK welcomes UPA's choice of Presidential candidate

Chennai, Jun 15 (UNI) Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder-leader Dr S Ramadoss has appealed to leaders of all political parties in the country to elect unopposed, Ms Pratibha Patil, the UPA-Left parties' nominee for Presidentship.

Welcoming the UPA-left party leaders' decision to field Ms Patil for Presidentship, the PMK leader, in a statement here, said, the decision, which was the highest honour bestowed on women in the country, should be welcomed by all.

It was a commendable decision and leaders of all political parties in the country should come forward to elect her without any contest, he appealed.

''This is the highest honour given to a woman in the country, 60 years after Indpendence,'' he said.

Dr Ramadoss congratulated Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress President Sonia Gandhi and the UPA alliance party leaders for unanimously selecting Ms Patil for the highest post of the First Citizen of the country.

Welcoming the decision, TNCC President M Krishnasamy, in a statement today, expressed confidence that Ms Patil would be a guiding spirit for womenfolk in the country.

Describing the selection of Ms Patil as the ''finest turning point'' in India's political history, the Congress leader said Ms Patil, who had declared that she would fight for the oppressed and remove economic imbalances, would put India on the path of development.
