JK Police says suicide attack foiled, two Pak militants killed
Srinagar, June 15 (UNI) The Jammu and Kashmir police today claimed to have foiled a 'fidayeen (suicide)' attack by killing two Pakistani militants on the city outskirts early this morning.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Operations Mohammad Irshad said acting on specific information gathered through various interceptions police apprehended a hardcore militant, identified as Abu Faisal, a resident of Srinagar.
During sustained interrogation, the militant disclosed that a 'fidayeen' squad had sneaked into the Srinagar city to carry out a suicide attack, he added.
The SP said police took the militant's disclosure very seriously and immediately swung into action. Special check posts were laid in the city and security enhanced at all vital places.
Several vulnerable areas were put to comprehensive security searches, he said, adding the cordon and search continued in Rajbagh-Nowgam area throughout the night.
At around 0300 hrs this morning, when a police party reached Gojbugh at Nowgam, it came under heavy fire from militants, who had taken shelter in a garden, Mr Irshad said.
The fire was returned and in the ensuing gun-battle, both the militants were neutralised, he added.
However, the SP said a wanted militant, Obaid alias Shahid, was able to escape in wounded condition amid fierce gunfight.
The SP said the slain militants were identified as Abu Tufail and Abu Hafiz, both residents of Pakistan. Two AK rifles, two Pouches and five grenades were seized from their possession, he added.
Mr Irshad attributed the success to technology. ''Technology has once again led us to a major success,'' he added.
