Tripura: Rs 18.35 cr for militants rehabilitation

Agartala, June 15: The Centre has agreed to sanction Rs 18.35 crore for rehabilitation of surrendered militants in Tripura till mid June and asked the state government to contribute Rs 1.84 crore.

Official sources here today said following the allocation the state-level screening committee had approved 991 surrendered rebels of various outfits under the scheme as per the provision of Ministry of Home Affairs.

The state home secretary said 768 surrendered insurgents would be imparted vocational training in the rehabilitation camps in first phase and rest given short-term training accordingly.

According to the package, each genuine surrendered militant is eligible to get Rs 2,000 as monthly stipend besides Rs 1.5 lakh fixed deposit. The benefit would be given after due approval of the state level screening committee, sources said.

The record shows about 583 NLFT and 170 ATTF militants surrendered to the security forces during January 1998 and June 12, 2007.
