AASU urges PM, CM to expedite NRC for delimitation
Guwahati, June 15 (UNI) The All Asom Students Union (AASU) today urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to expedite the work of the National Registrar of Citizen (NRC) so that constituency could be redelimitated.
Talking to medipersons AASU adviser Dr Samujjal K Bhattacharya said public hearing for the constituency delimitation was ''only suspended, not stopped''.'' The Delimitation Commission cannot prepare the NRC work and they have to delimitate the constituencies at one point. So it is the duty of Prime Minister Singh, who represents our state and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to expedite the NRC work because the delimitation was done on the basis of the population figure which has high number of Bangladeshis,'' Mr Bhattacharya said.
''Once the NRC is updated, the name of the Bangladeshis would not be there and after that delimitation could be done. Otherwise the political control of the state would go to them as the Bangladeshi dominated constituencies were showing higher growth of population resulting higher number of constituencies in comparing to the non affected areas like upper Asom,'' he said.
The AASU had recently led an all party team to New Delhi and met Delimitation Commission Chairman Kuldeep Singh and other political leaders impressing upon the complicated situation arising out of the delimitation process, which has raised series of protest all over the state.
