Panaji, June 15: Entire marine fishing activity in this tourist State of Goa has come to a standstill with effect from today till next month end to help rejuvenate the fishes during the current breeding season.

All fishing trawlers are off the sea and were seen anchored along the 105-km coastline in Goa where most of the inhabitants have been traditional fish-eaters.

It is known for serving various fish delicacies in eating joints and posh hotels for visi tourists in all seasons.

The ban on fishing in the monsoon is in pursuance of a Supreme Court directive for all maritime states, according to the fisheries department officials.

Apart from meeting the local consumer needs, Goa exports about one lakh tonnes of fish earning at least Rs 50 crores during the season.

The authorities have sealed all the seven fishsing jetties besides directing the oil companies to stop fuel supplies to the trawlers.

The ban, which is in vogue in neighbouring states also, however, does not apply to the traditional fishermen who use canoes and small boats to eke their livelihood.
