Shillong, June 14: The powerful Khasi Students' Union has resolved to continue to oppose the proposed Uranium mining project in Meghalaya's West Khasi Hills district.

The KSU, which spearheaded a series of agitations against mining of the nuclear ore had vowed not to succumb to any pressure.

''The overwhelming support from the people has made us determined to oppose uranium mining at all cost,'' KSU leaders Samuel Jyrwa and Hamlet Dohling said in a joint e-mail today.

Last week, the influential tribal student's body had launched a week-long agitation to protest the just-concluded public hearing at Nongbah Jynrin village near the proposed mining areas at Kylleng-Pyndengsohiong and a processing plant at Mawthabah.

Demanding immediate release of all its activists, including Central organising secretary Daniel Khyiem, the KSU leaders condemned the 'police brutality' on Mr Khyriem and Phyrnai Kharkongor.

''Torture on our members and raids in their houses clearly indicate that the authorities were treating the KSU as an underground organisation,'' they said.
