Agartala, Jun 14 (UNI) His pursuit of love landed him in prison but the fruit of his pursuit of knowledge put the prison in jubilation.

Put behind bars in Agartala Central jail on charge of kidnapping his sweetheart, 21-year-old Saruj has come off with second division in Tripura Madhyamik Examination this year making the jail staff and inmates dance and celebrate to his success.

Saruj, who obtained 54 per cent marks in the exam, was sentenced to ten years of imprisonment in August 2006 for taking hostage of his girlfriend in 2005.

Talking to UNI, Saruj said Tripura Board of Secondary Examination (TBSE) allowed him to appear in the examination as an external candidate considering his prayer and subsequently asked jail authorities to make special arrangements for him.

''I am a victim of circumstances. I had a long affair with her but suddenly her parents lodged complaint of kidnapping against me and finally I was awarded ten years imprisonment,'' Saruj stated adding that the jail administration sent him to a separate cell and provided him a favourable atmosphere for learning in the prison.

Accordingly, his workload in the jail as part of his punishment was lessened and all other facilities, including academic guidance, were offered in the cell by other educated superiors like Ramen Majumder and Prasenjti Debbarmma as well as the jail officials, said Jail Superintendent Santosh Bahadur.

''We supported him because education is his civil right and it sends out a message that jail is not only meant for punishment,'' Mr Bahadur said adding that the administration would extend all its support for furthering his education.
