Panaji, Jun 14 (UNI) Goa government today warned against serving frog meat as delicacy in the tourist state, which attracts imprisonment and fine.

''Catching, killing and selling of frogs or serving frog meat in eating places contravenes the provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972 attracting stringent punishment with fine and imprisonment,'' the authorities said here.

Killing of frogs was an 'ecological crime' against the food chain, affecting the ecological balance of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, they said.

Increasing incidence of snakes encroaching in human habitations and settlement areas was attributed to dwindling population of frogs in the wild, authorities said.

Massive toxic recalcitrant residues from agro-chemicals biomagnified in the food chain get accumulated in the fat deposits of frogs, the consumption of which over a period of time could trigger paralytic strokes, cancers, kidney failures and other deformities, the sources said.

The authorities issued this warning with monsoon being the mating, breeding and feeding season for frogs which become victims of human predators for their delicious meat available in certain eating joints, particularly in Goa.
