Mumbai, Jun 14 (UNI) The Union government is toying with the idea to add up 970 billion units of electricity by 2010-11 to cater to the ever-increasing demand of power in the country.

V S Verma, Member (Planning) of the Central Electicity Authority (CEA) revealed here today on the sidelines of the India Copper Forum 2007.

Mr Verma said the Centre has planned to enhance the per capita availability of electricity and develop a reserve of five per cent extra power as spinning reserve to meet the load-shedding challenges.

He pointed out that the government's goal is to realise access of power to all households in the country by the year 2009 and the demand should be fully met by 2012.

In addition, the per capita availability of electricity will also be increased to 1000 units by 2012, he said.

Although the strategic planning of energy resources for sustainalble development over a long term horizon was the need of the hour, Mr Verma emphasised that ''India's energy needs are rapidly increasing with growing economy, rising income levels and increasing population.'' However, India needs to sustain a 8-9 per cent growth rate over the next 25 years. In this background, corresponding growth in power becomes essential, he maintained.

Estimating an aproximate investment of Rs 10 lakh crore, the government has planned the electricity capacity addition of 78,577 MW, excluding 10,000 MW through non-conventional sources of energy.

In this, 16,553 MW by Hydro projects, 52,905 MW by thermal projects and 3,380 MW by nuclear projects will be added by the end of the 11th plan, Mr Verma added.
