Opposition demands special session of state legislatures

Patna, June 13 (UNI) Almost the entire opposition parties today charged the NDA government with failures in fulfilling the people's aspirations and demanded special session of Bihar legislature discuss the issues affecting public interests, especially the deteriorating law and order situation, corruption and other burning issues of the state.

After an emergent meeting of the opposition parties, the state secretary of the CPI Bardi Narayan Lal told newspersons here that they were concerned over the rising crime and other irregularities in the developmental schemes and raised their voices on such issues in the meeting.

He said the opposition gave an ultimatum of two weeks to the state government and unanimously demanded the Nitish government to hold all party meeting and convene a special session of the state legislature to discuss the situation for early solution of the crisis.

Referring to the crime figure widely discussed in the meeting, Mr Lal said from January to April, 901 murders,258 cases of dacoites, 617 loot, 695 kidnapping, 643 robberies and eight bank loots were reported. He further said on an average 225 people were killed every month, 64 dacoties, 150 loots, 175 kidnappings, 11 road robberies and two bank loots were taking place each month.

He said the opposition members termed the new police act as draconian and unanimously demanded its scrapping as it had paved the way for police excesses. Strong demands for preparing fresh BPL list was also made in the meeting as the opposition members felt the irragularities were beyond rectification. No job cards were distributed under National Rural Employment Gurantee Scheme which was in not being implemented properly. Apart from this, the waterlogging problems of the state capital was also an issue of major concern.

Mr Lal said that if the government failed to hold all party meting and convene special session of the state legislature, the opposition would hold a joint demosntration in Patna on June 28.

He said a joint action committee had been formed to decide the future course of agitation on the issues of common concern.

The opposition leaders who attended the meeting include RJD state president Abdul Bari Siddiqui, chief spokesman of Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee (BPCC) Prem Chandra Mishra, leader of the legislative party of CPI Rajendra Prasad Singh, member secretary of the CPI state council Jabbar Alam, Krishan Kant Singh of CPM, Nripen Krishan Mahto of All India Forward Block, and state president of Samta Party P K Sinha.
