New runway commissioned at Vizag Airport
Visakhapatnam, June 13 (UNI) A Dornier Aircraft of the Indian Navy took off from the new 10,000-foot runway of the airport here today, signifying its operationalisation by the Navy against all odds.
The take off was witnessed by Vice-Admiral R P Suthan of the ENC and officials from the Indian Navy, MES and the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
In his address, Vice-Admiral Suthan congratulated Captain G Prakash, Commanding Officer, INS Dega and AAI General Manager H S Suresh and their teams for the achievement.
The new runway satisfies the safety and quality requirements of military as well as civilian aircrafts. A team of experts from the Navy and the AAI would be keeping a close watch on the safety and operational aspects of flying operations.
The airport expansion cost Rs 182 crore and comprises numerous features like night landing facilities.
The new runway was expected to make air travel more comfortable, besides contributing to speedier development of the city.
